VS

Which strengths will you actually use?

Butterfly iQ3 offers a deeper software and organizational platform. Tri-scan Max offers a more direct way to own and use whole-body POCUS without a required annual software plan.

01
BEST FIT

Are you buying a scanner—or managing a POCUS program?

Schmetterling iQ3

Built for organized, multi-user adoption.

  • Selected offerings support centralized cloud, collaboration and quality workflows
  • More infrastructure for education, reporting and program oversight
BEST WHEN

You need to standardize and manage POCUS across multiple clinicians, departments or locations.

Tri-Scan Max

Built for clinicians who primarily need the scanner.

  • Core scan, measure, guide and save functions are included without an annual software plan
  • Supports selected iOS, Android and Windows viewing devices
WHY THIS CAN BE AN ADVANTAGE

If you do not need centralized program management, a simpler local workflow means less software overhead and fewer services to keep paying for.

THE CLEARER FIT

Butterfly is the stronger choice for building and managing a larger POCUS program. Tri-scan Max is the more direct fit for an individual clinician, mobile provider or small practice.

More platform is only more value when you use it. Tri-scan Max keeps whole-body POCUS and its core clinical workflow accessible without a required annual software plan.

BEFORE YOU CHOOSE AN ECOSYSTEM

Are you buying a scanner— or subscribing to an ecosystem?

Butterfly’s ecosystem can be valuable when AI guidance and enterprise workflows are essential. But if your real need is to scan, measure, guide and save, Tri-scan Max keeps the complete core experience in the scanner you own.

SOFTWARE ACCESS

Why separate the scanner from the software needed to use it?

Tri-scan Max includes B, M, Color, PDI and PW without a required software renewal.

BEDSIDE FREEDOM

Why keep bedside movement physically tied to a cable?

Built-in Wi-Fi leaves the cable behind and connects across compatible iOS, Android and Windows devices.

REAL-WORLD VALUE

Are AI and cloud workflows essential—or simply part of the premium?

If they are not central to your daily workflow, buy the scanning capability—not the overhead.

TRI-SCAN MAX FAQ

Questions before you decide.

Straight answers about ongoing costs, compatibility, delivery, clinical capabilities, support, and how Tri-scan Max compares with Butterfly.

01 — COST & OWNERSHIP

Know what you are paying for

No vague software terms, unexpected access fees, or required cloud membership after purchase.

Will I need a subscription or time-limited software license to keep scanning?

No. Your Tri-scan Max purchase includes access to the supported core scanning app and its included functions.

There is no mandatory monthly or annual membership, activation fee, or fixed software-access term required to continue live scanning, measuring, reviewing cine loops, and saving files locally.

Are software updates included at no additional cost?

Routine updates to the supported core scanning app are provided without a separate update charge or software subscription.

Because iOS, Android, and Windows platforms continue to evolve, we recommend confirming compatibility before changing devices or installing a major operating-system update.

Are there any activation, cloud, per-scan, or other required recurring fees?

No required activation fee, paid cloud plan, annual software license, or per-scan charge applies to the included core workflow.

Optional accessories, extended warranty coverage, expedited shipping, taxes, and applicable import charges are separate and are shown during ordering or on your quotation.

Does Tri-scan Max require internet access during an exam?

No active internet connection is required for routine scanning. Tri-scan Max creates its own wireless network and communicates directly with the connected phone, tablet, or Windows computer.

Your display device may show a “No Internet” notification while connected. This is expected because the wireless connection is transmitting ultrasound imaging rather than providing internet access.

02 — COMPATIBILITY & CAPABILITIES

Make sure it fits your workflow

Supported screens, included imaging tools, file handling, and intended clinical applications.

Which phones, tablets, and computers are compatible?

Tri-scan Max supports selected iPhone and iPad models, Android 12 or later on compatible non-Samsung devices, and Windows 10/11 computers.

Samsung Android devices are currently not supported. Compatibility can also vary by exact device model and operating-system version, so we recommend confirming your device before ordering.

Confirm your device compatibility
Are all core imaging modes and measurement tools included?

Yes. The included app provides B Mode, B/M Mode, Color Doppler, Power Doppler/PDI, and Pulsed Wave Doppler/PW without requiring a separate software upgrade.

Included tools cover general distance, area, trace, and angle measurements; obstetric biometry with gestational age and estimated delivery date calculations; PW Doppler velocity and hemodynamic measurements; and needle guidance and enhancement tools.

Available controls and measurements vary according to the selected probe type, imaging mode, and preset.

Can I save images, videos, and DICOM files without a cloud plan?

Yes. Images and recorded video clips can be saved locally on the connected viewing device without purchasing a cloud membership.

The supported workflow also provides static DICOM image export. Cine loops are saved locally as video files rather than exported as DICOM cine studies.

Customers requiring a specific PACS, EMR, worklist, or institution-level integration should confirm that workflow before ordering.

Is Tri-scan Max suitable for my intended application?

Tri-scan Max combines convex, linear, and phased-array scanning capabilities in one handheld device.

The convex array supports deeper abdominal, obstetric, gynecological, kidney, and urological imaging. The linear array supports vessels, thyroid, breast, nerves, musculoskeletal anatomy, and other superficial structures. The phased array supports cardiac, lung, and intercostal imaging through a smaller acoustic window.

Suitability still depends on the anatomy, scanning depth, clinical objective, and the user’s professional training. Tri-scan Max is intended for trained healthcare professionals or users operating under appropriate professional supervision.

03 — PURCHASE, DELIVERY & SUPPORT

What happens after you order

From order confirmation and delivery to setup, evaluation, warranty protection, and ongoing product support.

What happens after I place my order?

After your order is placed, you will receive an email confirmation with your order details. Most orders are prepared for shipment within 1–2 business days, and tracking information is emailed once the package has been dispatched.

U.S. orders typically arrive approximately 3–5 business days after shipment. International delivery times vary by destination, shipping method, and customs requirements.

Once the scanner arrives, follow the included quick-start instructions to charge the device, install the appropriate app, and connect directly to the scanner’s Wi-Fi network. The DRSONO support team can assist if you encounter a setup or connectivity issue.

What training and setup support will I receive?

DRSONO provides a quick-start guide, full user manual, practical video resources, and product support covering app installation, wireless connection, imaging controls, measurements, saved files, and troubleshooting.

Product support explains how to operate the scanner and its software. It does not replace accredited ultrasound education, procedural training, clinical supervision, or medical judgment.

View training resources
What if the scanner does not fit my workflow?

The 14-day evaluation period begins on the delivery date and gives you time to assess the scanner with your compatible display device, intended application, and working environment.

Returns require prior authorization and must meet the applicable timing, product-condition, accessory, packaging, and shipping requirements. For returns not related to a confirmed product defect, return shipping is the customer’s responsibility.

We recommend contacting support promptly if you encounter a setup, image-quality, or compatibility issue so the team can help before the evaluation period ends.

What warranty protection is included?

Every new Tri-scan Max includes a one-year standard warranty. Optional extended warranty coverage can be selected separately during purchase.

Warranty eligibility depends on the nature of the issue and the applicable warranty terms. The support team may request troubleshooting information, images, or videos before arranging service.

04 — COMPARING WORKFLOWS

Coming from Butterfly?

Both systems support portable whole-body ultrasound, but their connectivity, software, storage, and ownership models are different.

This comparison focuses on practical workflow differences. Butterfly features and software terms may vary by product, selected plan, organization, and region.
What is the main difference between Tri-scan Max and Butterfly?

Tri-scan Max prioritizes a wireless probe-to-screen connection, local file saving, support for compatible iOS, Android, and Windows devices, and access to its included core scanning app without a required recurring software fee.

Butterfly uses a cabled probe-to-display connection and is built around the Butterfly app and connected software ecosystem. Available cloud, collaboration, and organization-level capabilities depend on the selected Butterfly product and software offering.

The two systems are not identical replacements. The more appropriate choice depends on the connectivity, storage, software, IT, and organizational workflow you require.

How do the ongoing software costs compare?

Tri-scan Max includes its supported core scanning app without a mandatory monthly or annual membership. There is also no fixed five-year software-access term required to continue using the included core functions.

Butterfly currently provides different software options, including annual membership tiers and an upfront Advanced software-access option with a stated five-year term. Available pricing and included services depend on the selected offering and may change over time.

When comparing cost, consider both the initial hardware purchase and any software access, cloud, collaboration, or organization-level services your workflow requires.

How do connectivity and display-device options differ?

Tri-scan Max connects wirelessly to the viewing device through the scanner’s own Wi-Fi network. This keeps the probe physically untethered during an exam and does not require an active internet connection for routine scanning.

It supports selected iPhones and iPads, compatible non-Samsung Android 12 or later devices, and Windows 10/11 computers. Samsung Android devices are currently not supported.

Butterfly scanners use a physical cable between the probe and the supported viewing device. Exact device support depends on the Butterfly scanner generation and current compatibility requirements.

Which system is more likely to fit my workflow?
TRI-SCAN MAX May fit better when you prioritize:

Wireless scanning, no required recurring fee for the core app, iOS, compatible Android, and Windows flexibility, local saving, and a straightforward individual or small-team workflow.

BUTTERFLY May fit better when you prioritize:

Butterfly-specific cloud services, connected organization-level workflows, or capabilities associated with a particular Butterfly software offering.

Your final decision should reflect your clinical application, display devices, IT requirements, storage policies, integration needs, and expected total cost of ownership.
